This locomotive was built by Andrew Barclay in 1918 to fulfil an order from Sulphide Corporation of London but it was requisitioned on completion by the Ministry of Munitions and sent to Persia where it remained for many years, latterly in the service of the Anglo-Persian Oil Company.
Ajax was withdrawn from service in 1968, and made its way to the Isle of Wight Steam Railway in 1972, where it sat awaiting overhaul for over 20 years. It then received a full overhaul, and was returned to steam in October 2004, pulling its first passenger trains in the summer of 2005. It was then withdrawn from service at the end of the 2014 running year, and was placed on static display for 10 years in Train Story until in late 2024, it was transported to NLR with a goal of returning to steam.
